Sub-committees 

Data Committee

The Data Committee handles all issues of cardiothoracic data collection, analysis and presentation.  It explores issues of process analysis and extend the range of outcome measures.  The Committee is involved in the publishingof  the Blue Book for Cardiothoracic Surgery, advises the SCTS Executive on quality initiatives and develops the academic aspects of outcomes analysis in cardiothoracic surgery

Education Sub-committee

The Education Committee serves as a link betwen the Executive and the Cardiothoracic SAC to ensure that educational matters are highlighted in the Society. Specific tasks include the confirmation of CPD points for meetings which are assuming much greater importance than formerly due to the requirements of Revalidation. Other current matters are the Ethicon Scholarships, the recognition of courses for Allied Health Professionals, including Surgical Care Practitioners, and the development of Simulation Training Courses.

Intercollegiate Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Intercollegiate Specialty Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery is responsible to the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) for the format, scope and conduct of the specialty examinations, for examining on the curriculum as established by the ISCP/JCST, and for ensuring that the examinations are conducted in a fair, objective and reproducible manner. A broad range of assessment tools are used such as multiple choice questions in Single Best Answer (SBA) and Extended Matching Items (EMI) format (Section 1), and Clinical Examinations with and without patients (Section 2). For each section, there are two examinations per year.

Revalidation Committee 

The Revalidation Committee develops the approach of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland to the revalidation of Cardiothoracic Surgeons.  Its activities include defining "areas of practice", activity and outcomes, what data should be collected in each specialty group, what will our outcome measures be, Continuing Professional Development and annual appraisals.

Specialist Advisory Committee for Cardiothoracic Surgery

The SAC's role is to develop and ensure high standards in cardiothoracic surgical training. It reports to the Joint Committee on Surgical Training, which is an intercollegiate body. In practice, the SAC is used by deaneries and the GMC to ensure the quality of training.

SCTS Regional Speciality Professional Advisors (RPSA)

The RSPA is a Specialty Association Specialty appointment endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons. It is one of two key roles in a partnership between the Specialty Associations and the College to create a unified voice for surgery locally and to provide advice and support on professional matters to surgeons in the workplace.  Read more.
