1997 Cardiac Surgical Register Report

Summary Page

The table below provides summary statistics for cardiac procedures performed in the UK during the year April 1996 to March 1997.

  • Cardiopulmonary bypass refers to major operations requiring the use of a heart lung machine to take over the function of the heart and lungs while the heart is stopped to do the operation.

  • Valve Surgery refers to an operation for replacement or repair of one or more heart valves. All heart valve operations now use cardiopulmonary bypass, with the exception of a tiny handful.

  • IHD means Ischaemic Heart Disease. This group encompasses a variety of operations performed for this condition:
    1. Isolated coronary artery bypass surgery
    2. Coronary artery bypass surgery at the same time as heart valve surgery
    3. Miscellaneous. This largely constitutes operations performed for mechanical complications of IHD.

  • Coronary bypass surgery has until recently always been conducted using a heart lung machine. However, over the last two years a small number of coronary artery bypass procedures have been conducted without stopping the circulation. The data collection form will be modified for the year 1997-8 to take this trend into account. Until then all coronary bypass operations are registered under "Cardiopulmonary Bypass"

  • 95% Confidence Limits (95%CL) means you can be 95% sure that the risk of dying, for a given procedure, lies between the quoted percentages

This year complete data were not received from The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle or St Thomas' Hospital in London. Therefore, their data has been excluded from this chart. This omission accounts for 1802 isolated coronary bypass operations.
