Miscellaneous Operations for Ischaemic Heart Disease

Explanation

This table documents operations performed largely for the mechanical complications of ischaemic heart disease.

  • "Excision of an infarct or aneurysm" refers to removal of scar tissue from the wall of the heart, thereby shrinking the heart size.

  • "Repair of a VSD" means repair of a hole which has developed between the two main pumping chambers of the heart. This operation is usually performed as an emergency on very sick individuals.

  • Both groups of operation can be performed with or without coronary artery bypass grafts.
