Prizes from the 1997 Annual Meeting

The FACTS prize for the best paper on a cancer topic was awarded to Christos Alexiou, a registrar in cardiothoracic surgery at Nottingham City Hospital for his paper 'Surgery For oesophageal cancer: Prognosis is not uniformly bad'.

The David Cooper prize for the paper of best scientific content was awarded to Stephen Clark, Registrar at the Freeman Hospital for his paper 'Pharmacological & physical modulation of reperfusion injury after lung transplantation'.

The Ronald Edwards Medal and the Sorin prize of £5,000 was awarded to Stephen Rooney, Senior Registrar in Birmingham, for the research fund of his choice for his presentation 'Functional assessment of lung preservation does not detect endothelial injury'. Stephen has nominated the Lung Preservation Research Fund at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham as the recipient of the prize money.

The St.Jude Scholarship for £5,000 has been awarded to Andrew Owens of the Freeman Hospital, who will be spending twelve months in the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Sydney, Australia.

SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Society awards scholarships to a total value of £5,000. Application forms are available from Concorde Services, 10 Wendell Road, London W12 9RT and must be returned with supporting papers by the 31st December 1998
