The European Board of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgeons

Most European Surgeons are now aware of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EBTCS) and its objectives in establishing a level of achievement, knowledge and practice which hopefully will be the standard for Europe. The Board represents equally the EuropeanAssociation for Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS), the European Society for Cardiovascular surgery (ESCVS) and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), to cover all aspects of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in adults and children.

The objective of the EBTCS examinations is not to replace national accreditation, but to supplement it with a certificate which will identify a level of competence applicable from country to country. It is not intended as a mark of distinction, but as the standard which all competent surgeons should attain. Our hope is that hospitals and patients will recognise a surgeon carrying this certificate as having achieved that standards. The Board offers examinations which are held separately in the pure thoracic and predominantly cardiovascular parts of our specialty.
