Definitions for Paediatric Benchmark Operations

The following definitions were devised by Mr Jarda Stark , past president of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, in conjunction with surgical colleagues, to facilitate completion of the surgeon specific form for paediatric cardiac surgery.

Complete AVSD repair Repair of AVSD All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • ASD or PFO closure
  • PA debanding
  • Any combination of the above
Examples to exclude:
  • Concomitant repair of AVSD and Fallot
  • Concomittant repair of DORV
  • Repair of AVSD if ventricles unbalanced
Correction of Fallot's tetralogy Repair of Fallot 

 

All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • ASD or PFO closure
  • Shunt takedown
  • Repair PA branch stenosis
Examples to exclude:
  • Repair of Fallot + PA atresia
  • Concomitant repair of Fallot and AVSD
  • Concomitant repair of Fallot and absent PV syndrome
  • Concomitant repair of Fallot and hilar PA stenoses
  • Repair of Fallot using RV-PA conduit
Arterial Switch for TGA Switch for TGA All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • ASD or PFO closure
  • Any combination of the above
Examples to exclude:
  • Switch for TGA + VSD
  • Switch for DORV
  • Switch for double inlet LV or RV
  • Concomitant switch and coarctation repair
Repair of truncus arteriosus Repair of Truncus All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • ASD or PFO closure
  • Repair of interrupted arch
  • Any combination of the above
 
Repair of atrial septal defect Secundum ASD, Sinus venosus ASD All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • PAPVD repair
Examples to exclude:
  • Concomitant repair of ASD and TAPVD
  • Any other concomitant intracardiac repair
Repair of aortic coarctation Coarctation repair All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • Coarctation bypass using a graft +/- PDA occlusion
Examples to exclude:

Concomitant repair of coarctation and any intracardiac repair

Concomitant repair of coarctation and PA banding
Repair of ventriculoseptal defect Closure of single VSD All others
  Include with or without:
  • PDA occlusion
  • ASD or PFO closure
  • PA debanding
  • Any combination of the above
Example:
  • Concomitant repair of VSD and coarctation
  • Concomitant repair of VSD and Fallot repair
  • Concomitant repair of VSD and DORV
  • Concomitant repair of VSD and mitral valve surgery
  • Repair of residual VSD
  • Repair of multiple VSD
