
Location
The Annual Meeting of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in the year 2000 will be held in London in the Business Design Centre located in Islington, one of the most exciting and vibrant areas in London. Islington has a plethora of attractions to suit all tastes, including many theatres, restaurants, shops, pubs and bars. It also boasts the famous Camden Passage antique market and is only 15 minutes from the West End and 5 minutes the City.
Venue
The Business Design Centre is a purpose built venue, which compares favourably with many throughout Europe and is ideal for the Annual Meeting. Located on Upper Street, in the heart of Islington, the Centre itself has been open since 1996, but the Gallery Hall, where the Society Meeting sessions and exhibition will take place, has only been opened since May 1999.
The Exhibition
As usual, running alongside the Scientific Meeting, will be an exhibition comprising over 25 companies taking over 380 square metres of exhibition space. All lunch and refreshment catering will be held within the exhibition area as well as the Welcome Reception on the first evening.
The Meeting
As at past Meetings it is anticipated that the scientific component of the papers will be excellent and in particular there will be a very lively poster session discussion. In addition, on the Sunday there will be a Postgraduate teaching day. This will start with a wet lab session on the aortic valve aimed at years 1 - 4. Following a trainees lunch there will be sessions on Ruptured Oespohagus, Perfusion, the Surgery of Myasthenia Gravis and Physiology Under Extreme Conditions. On Monday there is a 90 minute mini symposium on surgery of the thoracic aorta and on Tuesday Professor Susie Eykin, FRCS. Will be chairing a symposium on multi-resistant organisms in cardio-thoracic surgery. After the scientific sessions on Wednesday, there will be two sessions devoted to Homographs and Lung Volume Reduction Surgery. The Honorary Guest Lecturer for the 2000 Meeting will be Professor Toni Lerut, All in all it promises to be an exciting and innovative scientific programme.
Social
As well as the Welcome Reception for all delegates to be held in the early evening on Sunday, 12 March, the Annual Dinner this year will be held at Merchant Taylors' Hall. The Guild of Merchant Taylors' of the Fraternity of Saint John Baptist in the City of London is one of the Twelve Great City Livery Companies surviving from mediaeval times. The Dinner will be held in the splendid Great Hall.
Accommodation
A number of hotels have been booked for the Meeting. The main hotel is located adjacent to the Business Design Centre and is a good 4 star hotel with all the comforts and facilities you would expect.Congress Secretariat
