Surgeon Specific Data Collection: Adult Cardiac Surgery

At the 1998 Annual Business meeting of the Society it was decided that surgeon specific data should be collected on marker operations in order to help restore public confidence in our specialty.

Please complete the form below according to the following criteria:

Isolated, first time coronary surgery includes:

All first time coronary surgery without a simultaneous additional surgical procedure e.g. valve replacement, aneurysmectomy.
Off pump and minimally invasive, first time coronary operations.
Those patients requiring an intra aortic balloon pump at the time of surgery
All such patients undergoing a subsequent procedure such as re-opening for bleeding, insertion of an intra-aortic balloon pump, laparotomy, peripheral vascular intervention, etc.
All such patients nominally under the care of each consultant, irrespective of who performed the operation i.e. include cases performed by trainees.

Isolated, first time coronary surgery does NOT INCLUDE:

Simultaneous valve replacement, aneurysmectomy or other cardiac procedure

Simultaneous vascular surgery e.g. Carotid endarterectomy, abdominal aneurysm repair.
Repeat coronary surgery

Total:

Death is defined as death on the same admission as surgery in the base hospital. This is easy to validate, but makes the assumption that dying patients are not transferred out to other hospitals in significant numbers
