Nursing Representative Byelaw

The EfCCNA Aniarti Conference, Florence

The EfCCNa- Aniarti conference  to be held in Florence, is moving ahead, and we are starting to get some abstracts coming through. However, we are aware that there are many exciting and innovative projects being completed by nurses and others that need to be disseminated. This conference provides an ideal forum for  European critical care nurses to learn and be stimulated by developments in the field. Please pass this email to interested parties.

TARA BARTLEY

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was appointed as the nursing representative in May 2006 following the resignation of Jacqueline Nicol as she moved to pastures new. The SCTS would like to thank her for all her hard work in the preceding three years.

I currently work at Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry as a Cardiothoracic Practitioner.
I joined the NHS 24years ago and completed my RGN training at The London Hospital. After qualifying I worked in medicine, surgery and accident and emergency before specialising in Critical Care in 1989. I have worked in general and cardiothoracic critical care, heart/ lung transplantation and liver transplantation. During this time I have been fortunate to work at Addenbrookes Hospital and Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, Warwick District General, The John Radcliffe Oxford, and the Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry. I have also spent three years setting up and running a nurse lead clinic in the community, prior to taking up my current position. Along the way I have completed a BAHons in Health & Social policy at the University of Warwick, an MSc in Health Science and, Specialist and Advanced practice awards at the University of Birmingham. I am an ALS instructor and my specialist interest, the subject of my thesis, is in collaborative working to improve patient care.

It is my intention to increase nursing profile and Associate membership of the SCTS. I would like to continue the good work achieved so far in developing the forum at the annual SCTS meeting. The Surgeons have changed the name from Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons to the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery. This demonstrates a forward thinking approach to promote collaborative ways of working for the patient pathway and erode traditional workforce divisions.

By sitting as the Nursing Representative on the Cardiothoracic Surgical Executive I will be able to play an active role to help steer workforce changes and influence matters in the cardiothoracic domain. I will also endeavor to promote sharing of developments and innovation between nurses working throughout the UK & Ireland.

I would like to develop the nurses’ page on the web site so it is informative, educational and a resource to network. This should also improve communication between centres, and specifically nurses & surgical assistants.

I am delighted to have been offered the position as nurse representative, if you have any comments, enquiries or issues you would like to discuss or that I may take to the SCTS on your behalf then please contact me on my email. Tara.bartley@ntlworld.com

CALL FOR SHARING OF INFORMATION

As the nurse rep for the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery and, having been appointed earlier this year I am keen to raise the profile of nursing. I am currently establishing contacts in the Cardiothoracic units throughout the UK & Ireland so I can develop a network to disseminate information from the SCTS and act as a resource between centers. I am trying to identify initiatives, innovation, projects, role development etc. that are being established through out the country. It would be good to have this knowledge so we can share data, information and achievements. It will also be useful when the SCTS are asked about the direction that non medical roles are developing within the specialty. If you have any current projects I would be interested to know.

If you are a happy to liaise with me then I look forward to hearing from you and I will put your email on the SCTS data base if it is not already on.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tara Bartley

The E library

The nurses’ web page welcomes the addition of the e library ‘Specialist Library for Surgery, Theatres and Anaesthesia’ which is now live..

http://www.library.nhs.uk/theatres

This site is pertinent to those working in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Its’ title suggests that it is relevant to those involved in the perioperative care of patients but on closer examination it promotes a collaborative approach between all practitioners. Indeed one can access articles arrhythmia management, transplantation, lung function, studies examining the role of aspirin, and off pump surgery.

The topics that can be accessed reflect current clinical issues and those that are at the foremost of directing our practice when evaluating the patient pathway and the delivery of quality care.

There is a clear link to shared knowledge and the up to date technology means that the user will find it quick and easy. Moreover, it is constantly up dated so readers can be confident that they are exploring current data and topics.

Finally the link pages allow the reader to move onto other areas of interest that may be useful to their practice and knowledge level.
