Cardiothoracic Surgery - an insight for medical students

Diseases of the heart and lungs account for a large proportion of deaths throughout the world. Cardiothoracic surgery is a relatively young speciality which grew rapidly after the Second World War. It is a challenging, absorbing and fascinating branch of surgery with a pace of change which is quickening. Miniaturisation of pumps and circuits and a desire to reduce morbidity by minimal access techniques have accelerated change in cardiac surgery, while video-assisted techniques have transformed thoracic surgery.
