Education Committee

The Education Committee serves as a link between the Executive and the Cardiothoracic SAC to ensure that educational matters are highlighted in the Society. Specific tasks include the confirmation of CPD points for meetings which are assuming much greater importance than formerly due to the requirements of Revalidation. Other current matters are the Ethicon Scholarships, the recognition of courses for Allied Health Professionals, including Surgical Care Practitioners, and the development of Simulation Training Courses

Mr Vivek Srivastava – SCTS Education Committee Communication Lead

Qualifications: M.B.,B.S., M.S.(Gen.Surg.), MRCSEd, M.Ch. (Cardiovasc & Thoracic Surgery), FRCSEd (CTh), PGCCMedEd, MBA scholar

Vivek is a consultant cardiac surgeon (Mitral subspecialty interest) at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford since February 2018. He has trained in India, then U.K. (Blackpool and Middlesbrough), finishing up with a Fellowship in Minimally invasive and Robotic cardiac surgery at Cleveland Clinic, OH, USA. He was one of the first recipients of the SCTS Ionescu Fellowship for Trust Appointed Doctors in 2015. Vivek has also been awarded the Ionescu Consultant Team Fellowship in 2020 towards facilitation of the Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery program at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He has a strong interest in education and apart from local training and education, he has been faculty for Basic Surgical Skills, FRCS and NOTSS courses.

As Communication Lead for the Education Committee of the SCTS, Vivek’s objective will be to utilise the power of modern channels of communication to build a stronger platform for the SCTS. He intends to encourage two-way communication between all sections of the SCTS community – from consultants to medical students. Vivek’s aim is also to help improve the existing educational resources of the Society and develop the portfolio further. He will also work towards increasing the Society’s international visibility on the educational front through collaboration with other national and international societies.

 

Mr Espeed Khoshbin – SCTS Education Committee Transplantation Lead

Espeed is a consultant cardiac and cardio thoracic transplant surgeon. Hi s journey in cardiothoracic transplantation began as a medical student when he took part in a self funded elective project abroad. He was inspired by this experience. Espeed believe s we should inspire the new generation of cardiothoracic surgeons to commit to super specialisation. Cardiothoracic transplantation is rapidly growing and changing. The opportunities for clinical and laboratory research in transplantation is enormous and will change the future of transplantation as we know it. The new innovative technologies in mechanical circulatory support, organ procurement and preservation has revolutionised the way we work today and emphasises the need for structured training. There is a great need for research into training in order to maintain standards and quality of care for our patients.

Espeed’s vision as the education lead for transplantation is to inspire trainees, ensure availability of financial support for education and to promote research in surgical education. He would promote development of new objective methods for training and assessment in cardiothoracic transplantation that could put the UK at the forefront of transplant training in the future.
